WELCOME TO ST NICHOLAS AT
FOREST HILL
Although a Saxon church once
existed on the site, the building is now mainly 14th century
mediaeval with the position of the central tower indicating an earlier Norman
ground plan. Visitors comment on its exceptional beauty and the pervading
atmosphere of peaceful tranquillity. The church sits atop one of the few hills
to the east of Oxford with wonderful views of Otmoor.
Many
of its rare features are recorded in works of art and architecture. There is a
mediaeval wall painting of the Last Judgement (The Doom), the tub font is 12
century, the altar rails and altar pierced panels are by Pugin. There are many
examples of Victorian stained glass windows. Two of the mediaeval quatrefoils
were on view at the Age of Chivalry Exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1987-88.
On the wall adjacent to the vestry there is a commemorative Triptych by a local
artist that vividly depicts the events of the Assumption. The church is open to
visitors and for private prayers every day.
